Artistic or Historic ?
When I first heard about the “Shroud of Turin“, I asked “What does the science say?” When I found out that “Carbon 14 Dating” resulted in a 12th century answer, I assumed that the artifact must, therefore, be a “Work of Art”. When I discovered that the patch from which the tested sample was taken derived from a 12th century repair to the original, no paint on the shroud is anywhere to be found, and that modern scientists still have no idea how the photograph-like image was made to appear on a piece of cloth over a thousand year old, I changed my opinion of its authenticity to being the burial wrap of Jesus of Nazareth to . . . “Maybe”.
Only the other day, this thought occurred to me . . . “As the artifact is in the possession of the Catholic church, and the Catholic church has always depicted the crucifixion of Jesus with the nails in His palms rather than wrists (an historical error, as only nails in the wrists could support the weight of a body during the grouse torture of being “nailed to a tree”), if the Shroud of Turin depicts the nails in the wrists, rather than the palms, then it is more than likely not a work of art, rather an ancient cloth, photographically burned with the intense light emanating from a miraculously resurrected body.
