This is not breaking news.  Electronic devices being hacked and people being cyberstalked has been going on for many years already.  More recently, there was much media coverage about South Carolina parents receiving threatening messages through their baby monitors.  A few days ago, the media reported about a Cleveland, Ohio family being cyberstalked:

They have a pile of routers and modems laying in their living room that the cable company has swapped out.

They’ve changed WiFi passwords countless times.

But, the invasion continues.

They don’t have Google Home or Alexa, but the family said it’s almost as if this person is listening.

“I was talking to my daughter, it was supposed to snow, and I was messing with my son saying, ‘Do you want to build a snow man?’ And he (the stalker) started playing, “Do You Want to Build a Snow Man” from the movie (Frozen), on our phone,” Romano said.

Accessing the Internet through a wired connection with an Ethernet cable is

  1. NOT AS EASY TO HACK
  2. Easy to set up
  3. More reliable
  4. Faster

There are countless articles about this online.  Here’s one from 2013, “4 Reasons Why Wired Networks are Still Better Than Wi-Fi.”  Excerpts include:

Ethernet has now had about 30 years to get better, and it’s become a pretty awesome way to get online.

And remember, we do everything online, so almost all of our personal information is just out there for the taking. In any neighborhood a reasonably skilled hacker could easily get into 5 or more networks using only a laptop with a wireless connection. A wired network, on the other hand, is completely contained. You have to physically connect to the network to access the information. The only other method of access involves very expensive methods that you probably won’t have to worry about unless you get on the wrong side of a national spy agency.

Wired internet connections also don’t emit harmful and carcinogenic wireless WiFi radiation.  Insurance companies aren’t even covering WiFi radiation exposure risks anymore.  So there’s that too.
